Intaglio Printing

The image is created in recessed lines and areas of the printing plate

Intaglio is one of the oldest and most expressive printmaking techniques and has been used by artists for centuries. What all intaglio techniques have in common is that the image is created below the surface of the printing plate, unlike relief printing, where the raised areas of the matrix transfer the ink.

In intaglio printing, the image is worked into the plate by creating recessed lines, dots, or areas beneath its surface. Ink is applied to the entire plate and worked into these recesses. The excess ink is then wiped from the smooth surface, leaving ink only in the parts that form the image.

During printing, a sheet of damp, highly absorbent paper is pressed against the plate under great pressure. The paper is forced into the recessed areas, where it picks up the ink and transfers the image to the sheet. This high-pressure process gives intaglio prints their distinctive character, with crisp lines, rich tonal values, and often a subtle plate embossment in the paper.

The principal difference between the various intaglio techniques lies in how the image is created in the plate. The recesses may be produced mechanically with tools, where the artist physically works the metal surface, or chemically through etching, in which acid is used to create the recessed areas.

Traditionally, intaglio plates are most often made of copper, although zinc and other metals are also used. By combining different techniques, artists can achieve a wide range of visual effects, from precise lines and intricate detail to deep blacks and subtle tonal transitions.

How the Image Is Created in the Plate

Intaglio differs from most other printmaking techniques in that the printing ink is held below the surface rather than on it. The plate acts as an image matrix in which the design is stored as a pattern of recessed lines and areas.

The different intaglio techniques are distinguished primarily by the way these recesses are created. Some methods involve the direct mechanical working of the plate, while others rely on chemical processes.

In mechanical techniques, metal is removed using hand tools. The artist cuts, scratches, or engraves directly into the plate, creating lines of varying width and character.

In chemical techniques, parts of the plate are protected with an acid-resistant ground before acid is used to etch the exposed areas. This allows the artist to work more freely and to create the image by drawing indirectly through the protective coating.

Many artists combine several techniques on the same plate to achieve greater richness and variation in the final print.

Etching

Etching is one of the most widely used intaglio techniques and is based on a chemical process. A metal plate, usually made of copper or zinc, is coated with an acid-resistant ground. The artist draws through this coating, exposing the metal beneath.

The plate is then placed in an acid bath, where the acid bites into the exposed areas, creating recessed lines and areas in the metal. These recesses are subsequently filled with printing ink and transferred to paper.

Etching offers great freedom of line and expression and resembles drawing in many ways. By controlling how long the plate remains in the acid, the artist can vary the depth of the lines, producing differences in line weight and tonal intensity.

Etching is often combined with other techniques, such as aquatint, allowing detailed line work to be combined with larger tonal areas and smooth gradations.

Drypoint

Drypoint is a direct mechanical intaglio technique in which the artist scratches the image directly into the plate using a sharp needle or another pointed tool.

As the plate is incised, the displaced metal is pushed up along the edges of the lines, forming a fine raised burr. This burr holds additional ink and gives drypoint its characteristic soft, velvety lines.

Drypoint requires neither acid nor chemical processes, relying instead entirely on the artist's hand and tools. Because the burr gradually wears down during printing, the technique is generally best suited to relatively small editions.

Engraving

Engraving is one of the oldest intaglio techniques and was developed in Europe during the fifteenth century. The image is cut directly into a copper plate using a burin.

The artist creates precise lines with carefully controlled depth and width and can achieve tonal variation through the density, direction, and cross-hatching of the engraved lines.

Before the invention of photography, engraving played a major role in reproducing paintings, illustrations, maps, and scientific images. At the same time, it also developed into an independent artistic medium.

Aquatint

Aquatint is used primarily to create tonal areas and smooth gradations rather than distinct lines. The technique is based on applying a fine layer of acid-resistant material, traditionally powdered rosin, to the plate before it is etched.

The acid bites between the particles, producing a finely textured surface capable of holding printing ink. By varying the biting time and combining different areas of the plate, the artist can create a wide range of grey tones and deep, rich blacks.

Aquatint is frequently combined with line etching, where the lines are created through drawing and the tonal areas through the aquatint process.

Mezzotint

Mezzotint is an intaglio technique that differs from most others in that the artist begins with a completely roughened plate.

The entire plate is first roughened with a specialised tool called a rocker, creating a surface capable of holding large amounts of ink and producing a deep, even black. The artist then works from dark to light by smoothing or scraping selected areas of the plate.

The technique is renowned for its soft tonal transitions, rich blacks, and almost painterly effects of light. Mezzotint became especially popular during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries for reproducing paintings and portraits, but today it is used primarily as an independent artistic technique.

Contemporary Intaglio

Intaglio continues to evolve, and many artists combine traditional methods with modern technology.

Photopolymer plates may be used as an alternative to traditional metal plates, and digital workflows can form part of the production of printing matrices. Digital files may, for example, be used to produce films for exposure processes or to control machines that engrave or otherwise prepare the printing plate.

These methods do not necessarily change the character of the technique. As long as the printing matrix forms part of the artist's creative process, the resulting work can still be considered an original print.

Intaglio is therefore both a historic craft and a living contemporary medium. From the precision of engraving and the freedom of etching to the rich tonal values of mezzotint, the technique offers artists unique opportunities to explore line, light, texture, and surface.
